Direct adjustment of rates requires the use of a standard population. In this example, the standard is based on the combination of communities A and B. As illustrated, the age-specific rates for population A are applied to the standard to determine the number of expected deaths for that population. This analysis is also performed for population B to determine the expected number of deaths for that community. The age-adjusted rates are determined and based on the expected number of deaths relative to the standard population. In this example, the adjusted rates are quite similar, indicating that the difference in crude rates was, in fact, due to population variation in age.
