The SMR is interpreted as follows: if the SMR is greater than 1.0, more deaths occurred than expected. If the SMR is less than 1.0, fewer deaths occurred than expected.

The choice of the method of adjusting rates (i.e., direct or indirect) depends on the data available (i.e., age-specific rates for direct adjustment), and the desired outcome (i.e., an adjusted rate or a SMR)
