As illustrated, the crude death rate for population A is more than twice as large as that for B. However, their age-specific rates are quite similar. Thus, one would expect the overall summary rates to also be similar. The observed differences in the crude rates is most likely due to differences in the age distribution of the populations. Population B appears to be younger than Population A. Thus, these rates should be adjusted.
