Since little data exist to estimate the prevalence of activity-related injuries in the general population, the only source of prevalence data is from select studies of athlete populations or from exercise training studies. Most prevalence estimates of activity-related injury have a large range due to the type of study sample included. One study conducted by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did select a national sample of US adults and provides estimates for a select few moderate activities. (Powell et al. Med Sci Sport Exerc, 1998;30(8):1246-49) This paper reported a low prevalence of injury for walking, gardening and cycling.
