Even though we know physical activity has many benefits we know little about the prevalence and burden of activity-related injuries among the general population. Most previous studies have been limited to elite athletes, case series and clinical populations. There are few population-based studies of physical activity-related injuries and virtually none are prospectively designed to define injury risk or calculate injury rates.
