Very few adverse effects are associated with exercise and physical activity. However, abnormal cardiac, hemotological and metabolic conditions have been linked to participation in exercise. The most common adverse effects of activity are musculoskeletal injuries and the resulting potential for the development of traumatic osteoarthritis.

In light of the national physical activity recommendations, there is a need for more information on these potential adverse effects so the public can be advised on the safest forms of physical activity to improve health.
