One cannot underestimate the impact that Katie Couric has had. We are now flooded with screening colonoscopies. You can’t get a better, more attractive spokesperson for a cause. What’s interesting is that her husband had colon cancer at 42; he never would have been screened under current guidelines. She had a colonoscopy and had it put on the web in streaming video, had it broadcast on the Today show, and it still has impact. She came to speak at the GI meeting and they jammed the room with thousands of people, and was surprised but then you realize, she has probably done more for screening than anyone has and probably anyone will.
