One method to overcome the difficulty of distinguishing injuries in VASRD codes is to link it with information from the MEB reports. Medical Evaluation Board data classify the medical conditions underlying disabilities by ICD codes. ICD codes can identify more details on the medical condition involved.

In the Naval MEB database, there were a total of 15,491 PEB reviews with associated MEB reports related to musculoskeletal conditions. The conditions listed in the MEB reports are shown in this table (based upon ICD codes 710-739). Again, it suggests that several of the conditions could have arisen from injuries. Joint disorders, back disorders, and knee problems may represent the long-term sequelae of previous injuries in this young population. There is no information, though, to show what events led to these conditions.
