It’s this background that led to the establishment of the NIH a dozen years ago of an Office of Alternative Medicine and its elevation in 1999 to the national center.  And our mission, very concisely stated, is to conduct rigorous research on CAM practices, to educate and train a cadre of researchers who are capable of doing the kind of work to provide the evidence that the public deserved, and to take that information, to use it, to raise the level of understanding about these practices by the consumer and by health professionals.  That’s our goal.
