To return to the IBD1 example from my colleague, the BAC clone containing the marker with two different alleles associated with the disease was sequenced completely, along with several neighboring clones.  Expressed sequence tags suggested the presence of a candidate gene in this region, which was named “IBD1.” Thirteen SNPs were identified in this region and typed in 235 available families.
