In 1999 West Nile disease entered the United States in infected birds. Hundreds of dead birds were found in Connecticut, New Jersey and Long Island. 50 cases of encephalitis with 6 fatalities amongst the elderly occurred in NY state. The transmission to man was via mosquitoes which bred in stagnant water near NY.
