Epidemiology:

In the UK the disease is prevalent in the Border Country and Scotland. Disease coincides with seasonal tick activity which is optimal from April to June, and in September.

Transovarial spread of virus occurs, therefore larvae and nymphs are also infectious.

Animal to animal transmission is rare.

Personnel have been infected via respiratory or conjunctival routes when handling infected material.
