While the end of the cholera outbreak closely followed the removal of the pump handle, Snow did not blindly assume cause and effect. He confirmed his water-cholera hypothesis in an analytic study that was published in 1855 as a book entitled On the Mode of the Transmission of Cholera. It is this analytic research, and his substantiated belief that cholera was a contagious disease, that elevated him to an icon among contemporary epidemiologists.
