The smooth line is a LOESS smoother that captures the long-term trend in the data. LOESS is similar to a moving average. Each data point is smoothed by considering the data points around it, and then an expected value for each data point is calculated based on these surrounding values. The level of smoothing depends, therefore, on the number of data points used.
