This illustrates what can be achieved by successful infection control treatment.

Please not that the patient suffered debilitating disease here despite successful infection control. There is severe and permanent tissue loss. No bone grafting techniques have been shown to attach to root surfaces over the long term. For that reason, bacteriology should be initiated in each practice to increase the prognostic abilities of the doctors. The doctors need not allow this to happen to their patients.

This also illustrates another important point. In the previous slide, it is apparent that the gingival tissue has moderate gingival recession. After infection control, the tissues shrink significantly resulting in the appearance of severe gingival recession. They are only shrinking to their healthy contour but the patient should be informed during case presentation that this will occur.
