This slide illustrate similar principles as the previous series, This is an acute abscess and I prefer not to touch these patients unless they are medicated with antibiotics first. Our preferred antibiotic is metronidazole due to its demonstrated effectiveness against anaerobes. However there are others such as clindamycin, doxycycline and Cipro.

After antibiotic usage, the patients can proceed to scaling without problems. There is less bleeding during the procedures this way and the patient is more comfortable since the tissue inflammation is reduced.
