There are no DNA variations of LPH correlated with hypolactasia or with lactase persistence. Thus, an unusual mechanism is involved:
  • a developmentally regulated change in mRNA transcription
  • which does not occur in subjects with persistence of lactase and
  • affects specifically LPH and not the other brush border glycosidases
