The challenges of medical device epidemiology as opposed to a more developed field of study like pharmacoepidemiology can be combined under two categories: device- specific and exposure-specific.
Device-specific has to do with trying to obtain data on the specific device used. Information on specific device usage (e.g. model, brand) is often lacking in data sources unless the study is designed specifically to look at devices. Exposure-specific is trying to determine the appropriate or most representative denominator when calculating rates.
