Spontaneous reporting systems that contain adverse event reports can be used to look for potential trends or problems (signal). As further analysis of the data is done, hypotheses can often be generated about these signals.
Most spontaneous reporting systems are underestimates of the true incidence or prevalence of the problem because they are passive in nature. In other words, the data are dependent on the participation of the reporter.
