We identified 17,958 Down syndrome cases among over 32 million deaths. We excluded 61 cases that were also coded as pregnancy terminations. The remaining 17,897 cases represent 5.6 Down syndrome-associated deaths per 10,000 total deaths for the study period. In comparison, the birth rate for Down syndrome is about 12.5 per 10,000.
