The use of the Multiple-Cause Mortality Files allows a population-based analysis and direct comparison to the general population. The study is based on recent data from over 17,000 Down syndrome-associated deaths, including many affected adults, whereas many of the previous studies of mortality in Down syndrome have focused on children.
