ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The Byzantine Music Workshop was inaugurated in February
of 1998 with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan
Maximos, Prelate of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of
Pittsburgh.
The objectives of the workshop are:
* To provide the basic knowledge of Byzantine Music
theory and practice, in authentic style of the Ecumenical
Patriarchate of Constantinople
* The in-depth analysis of Byzantine Music at a
scientific and scholarly level
* The provision of the necessary theoretical and
practical training to practitioners of Christian Orthodox
ecclesiastic chant, in solo and choral context
* The preservation and dissemination of Byzantine Music
as science and art by means of lectures, presentations
and publications
Classes meet every Thursday evening (6:20 PM for
beginners and 7:30 PM for advanced) in the Small
Conference Room of the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek
Orthodox Church in Aliquippa, PA (2111 Davidson Street,
Aliquippa, PA 15001, USA)
The Workshop is directed by Dr. Nicholas Giannoukakis,
Protopsaltis, Metropolis of Pittsburgh, who also directs
the Byzantine Choir of the Metropolis. Dr. Giannoukakis
is a world-reknown chantor and holder of two diplomas in
Byzantine Music with a distinction of excellence in
addition to personal tutelage and formation by the
distinguished Archon Protopsaltis of the Greek Orthodox
Metropolis of Toronto (Canada), Professor Constantin
Lagouros. Dr. Giannoukakis is a recipient of numerous
distinctions in North America and Greece for his
contributions to this musical art and tradition.
