' FLIGHT BEHAVIOR - Sand flies are weak fliers, travel in short hops rather than in sustained flight - Flight range is a function of habitat and host availability         -  Forest, 50-200 meters         -  Savana, 200 m 2.2 km - In forests, vertical dispersal between canopy and forest floor is common - Fly only at night unless disturbed in their daytime resting site - Winds speeds in excess of 1.5 m/sec inhibit flight; flight ceases altogether in light winds of 4-5 m/s - Most fly horizontally near ground level           -   Less air movement           -   More animals
