The LC50 for methyl isocyanate (4 hours exposure and following victims for 7 days) for humans is probably around 10-30 ppm (a best guess from animal studies) and, therefore, when released in a populated area resulted in about 5,000 deaths and 100,000 injured individuals. Of these probably 5,000 have permanent pulmonary injuries. Therefore storage of large quantities can present a serious hazard.
