This slide shows the number of U.S. adults (in millions) with various levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) according to whether they have either coronary heart disease (CHD) or at least two risk factors but no CHD. The data are obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (NHANES III), 1988–1994 (unpublished data). With regard to HDL-C levels in individuals with CHD, the population distributions were as follows: < 35 mg/dL, 2.1 million; 35–<45 mg/dL, 3.4 million; 45–<60 mg/dL, 3.1 million; and > 60 mg/dL, 2.4 million.
