There are several types of particulates which respirators may filter out and remove contaminants from the breathing zone of the user.  Dusts are solid particles which are usually generated by some mechanical means.  Fumes are solid particles generated by condensing a gas, or by a chemical reaction.  Mists are suspended liquid droplets usually generated by either a mechanical means, or a chemical reaction, or a combination of both.
