During a period in our history when poor race relations caused mistrust of medical providers, black nurses played a role that not only healed the sick, but also bridged a gap in the health care system.  Black nurses were often the only healthcare workers available to deliver care to poor, rural blacks, and these census statistics show how severe limitations in public health nursing manpower.
