Ms. Edith McNeil Holmes was a black public health nurse in Halifax County, North Carolina who visited poor farmers and their families who were suffering the results of poverty, hunger, and pellagra.  Ms. Holmes recalls her joy when doctors from Raleigh, NC supplied her with powdered milk and brewers yeast that she would deliver to hungry families in her district.
