Confining large numbers of fish in coastal waters, especially in mangroves and wetlands, can degrade the marine environment and threaten wild species by destroying nursery habitat, generating large quantities of nutrients and other wastes, importing diseases that can spread to wild fish, or oil for use in manufacturing feed for livestock and farmed fishes.
