Asia produces 90 % of global aquaculture output and China alone contributes more than 2/3 of the total. Although Europe, North America and Japan together produce just over one-tenth of the global total, these regions consume the bulk of farmed seafood that is traded internationally. Various species of carp dominate the tonnage produced.

China increased volumes of salmon, shrimp and other high-value species that are marketed mainly in industrialized countries. Also, farmed output and markets for other lower value species such as tilapia have increased in both developing and industrialized countries.

Aquaculture demand, human overpopulation and a healthful human diet for the future require considerable reflexion.
