The positive public health effects of the increased use of prenatal testing in the Parisian population have to be balanced against a relatively high rate of amniocentesis with the attendant loss of normal fetuses and the potentially negative consequences of widespread use of prenatal testing for individuals born with Down’s syndrome and other congenital anomalies.
 
Any such negative consequences should be evaluated while considering the choices afforded to women and their families as a result of prenatal testing.
