1. BV is now recognized as a polymicrobial superficial vaginal infection involving the loss of the normal lactobacilli and an overgrowth of anaerobes.

2. Factors influencing the change in the microbiologic flora include hormonal changes (during menstruation: relapse of BV around the first 7 days of menstruation and resolved BV during midcycle), pregnancy or antibiotic administration.
