Varying cure rates for each therapy:

1. Flagyl:   84-96% 7 day course

                 54-62% single dose

2. Cleocin: one clinical trail to date showing 94% cure rate

3. Metrogel: 75-81% 5 day therapy

4. Clindamycin cram: 82-96% 7 day therapy

* No significant difference in cure rates between the four therapies therefore each are equally effective.

* as many as 30% of women relapse within a month of treatment (more so for topical vs. systemic therapies) and those women with recurrent BV represent a therapeutic challenge. Of note, treatment of male partner does not reduce the recurrence rate.

* Only oral systemic treatments found to reduce pregnancy-associated morbidity (ie. PTD).
