General findings regarding the diagnosis and treatment of psychosis include the following: patterns of referral and treatment differ among ethnic groups with black patients more likely to be diagnosed with severe symptomatology and schizophrenia (whites more likely to be diagnosed with major depression), and of those diagnosed, more likely to be involuntarily hospitalized for the diagnosed disorder.
