Low birth weight: The World Health Organization (WHO) defines low birth weight (LBW) as a birth weight < 2500g (WHO,1970). LBW infants include both those who are preterm (<37 weeks gestational age) and those who are small for their gestational age (< 10th percentile for gestational age) (Rasmussen, 2001). In this lecture, we will consider both definitions.
