Phase 3: Explosive spread of HIV - 1994-1998

The period 1994-1998 is the most critical period in the evolving HIV epidemic in South Africa. This period marks the explosive growth in HIV transmission fuelled by high incidence rates in young women and the coalescence of genetically diverse epidemics. Ironically this period coincided with the establishment of democracy in South Africa.
