When a host is infected with a single cloned trypanosome there is a partially ordered sequence of VAT's, yet every new VAT can be totally different from the previous one without any crossreactivity. In general, the VSGs that appear in an infection can be divided in early, medium and late VSGs as they have a slight tendency to appear in order.
