The form that the epidemic curve takes will suggest if the epidemic is point source, continuous or person-to-person.

Point source outbreak: By determining the distance (or time) between the suspected exposure and the peak of the outbreak, an incubation period can be estimated. Based on the known incubation periods of infectious agents, it may be possible to determine the causative agent.
