An estimated 3 million disabled leprosy patients in the world need care (Report on WHO-AIFO Joint workshop, Short report in Leprosy Review, December, 2000).

These patients still do not enjoy human rights fully in spite of medical advancements in the field of leprosy. We still do not have an estimate of such leprosy-disabled people in urban locations. Highly disabled leprosy patients tend to form their own groups (self settled leprosy colonies) in and around cities/towns/metropolitan areas.
