You are advised to read either the chapter in Weiten or Atkinson for a more detailed outline of basic perceptual processes.

Visit the excellent pages at Maquarie University psychology department web site. The lectures on feature detectors and on illusions and constancies are informative, particularly the good explanation of geons.

Be aware. Think when you are out and about regarding what is happening and why you are experiencing what you are experiencing. Visit Star Ferry. Wait in the boarding area and fix you vision through the window onto the ferry bobbing up and down on the water. After a while you may begin to feel the ferry is in fact still and you are moving. The effect of this on your physiology can be quite profound. Or play a few video games, such as flying or car driving. Notice how, after a few moments, the movement of the vehicle becomes stable as your reference and the periphery of your world begins to change. Eventually, your whole CNS is filling in the gaps and your body is pumping out adrenaline, as if it were really happening. And who’s to say it isn’t….after all, what really is real?
