ARTICLE I: NAME

The name of the organization shall be the Turkish-American Student Association (TASA).

ARTICLE II: PREAMBLE

TASA is an organization of a non-political nature designed to achieve cooperation and better communication among the Turkish Students and to promote mutual understanding and more effective brotherhood among all students from all nations. TASA is organized to expose, advance and further Turkish culture.

ARTICLE Ill: OFFICERS

    (a) Officers will be formed by the student body at large.
    (b) Executive Committee will be elected by members and shall consist of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Social Activities Director.

ARTICLE IV: DUTY OF OFFICERS

     (A) President
1. To arrange, attend and preside over all meetings.
2. To prepare an agenda for the meetings.
3. To act as an official spokes-person on behalf of TASA at campus organization meetings.
4. To be responsible for promoting activities of TASA and fulfilling the objectives with cooperation of the other members.

     (B) Vice-President
1. To substitute and assume the responsibilities of the president's duties during his/her absence.
2. To be responsible for the coordination of special committees, and to assist the president, if necessary.
3. To perform the duties as the president may assign to him/her in the administration of the association.

    (C) Secretary
1. To keep the minutes of the meetings.
2. To notify all participants of the meetings.
3. To be responsible for TASA's correspondence and public relations.
4. To perform such duties as the president may assign in the administration of the association.

    (D) Treasurer
1. To keep all financial transactions and be prepared to report to the members at any time.
2. To prepare the yearly budget of TASA.
3. To perform such duties as the president may assign in the administration of the association.

    (E) Social Activities Director
1. To arrange all social activities.
2. To perform such duties as the president may as~ sign in the administration of the association.

ARTICLE V: ELECTION OF OFFICERS

1. The term of office for the officers will be one calendar year.
2. There will be annual elections on the first Saturday of the month of April.
3. New officers start serving the last Monday of April.
4. The location of the elections will be announced to all members of TASA at least two weeks prior.
5. Officers will be chosen from students enrolled at the university will include both graduates and/or undergraduates who are members of TASA.
6. All members, who completed the membership application of TASA, are entitled to vote. (Pitt ID is required.)
7. To be elected as an officer, a simple majority of the votes will be needed.
8. Elections shall be conducted by secret ballot only. An officer will be allowed to hold more than one position if needed.
9. An officer may be re-elected as many times as he/she wishes.
10. An officer who resigns must give one month prior notice the president, and the president will be responsible for filling the position.
11. An electoral officer will be elected by officers and will be responsible for the supervision of the election.
 
 

ARTICLE VI: REMOVAL OF THE OFFICERS

1. Removal of the officers shall require a two4hirds vote of the total number of members of TASA.

ARTICLE VII: VOTING POWERS OF OFFICERS

1. Officers retain equal voting privileges of all members, and in case of a tie the president has authority in making the decision.
 

ARTICLE VIII: MEMBERSHIP

1. Membership is open to all currently enrolled students, faculty, and the staff of the University of Pittsburgh who fill the membership application form.  Student membership will at all times comprise at least 75% of the membership.  No hazing or illegal discrimination will be used as a condition of membership in the organization.
2. The proper form of the membership application form is attached as the last page of this constitution.
3. Membership recruitment is open all year round.
4. Members are eligible to participate in any, or all activities of TASA including the election process and holding of the office.
5. All members are expected and encouraged to contribute toward the functioning of the association and adhere to the principles thereof and abide by the constitution as set forth above.
6. Membership is revoked when the member is no longer a student or a staff, or a faculty of the University of Pittsburgh.

ARTICLE IX: COMMITTEES
1. Committees will be formed and defined by the president as needed.
2. TASA is also a supporting organization for the establishment of Turkish Nationality Room in the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh in cooperation with the responsible committees of the Turkish Nationality Room, Pittsburgh Turkish American Association, and Turkish community in Pittsburgh. TASA will organize or support events planned by the responsible committees of the Turkish Nationality Room (TNR) until the completion of the TNR.

ARTICLE X: MEETINGS

1. Meetings will be held on the second Saturday of every month. A quorum of board meetings shall consist of three members. Decisions shall be taken by the majority vote of the members present. The president can call on the officers and the members under extraordinary circumstances.

ARTICLE M: FINANCES

1. All expenditures will be approved by the board officers. The treasurer will be authorized in signing checks.

ARTICLE XII: ADVISOR (S)

1. Advisor(s) shall be chosen by the board officers upon the recommendation of the members at large. Advisor(s) must be affiliated faculty or staff of the University. Their responsibilities shall consist of providing assistance and counsel to the board officers in regards to matters of the association and its activities.
 

ARTICLE XIII: EXTERNAL AFFILIATIONS

1. TASA will be externally affiliated with the Pittsburgh Turkish American Association, for sponsorship, coordination, and organization of special programs consistent with goals and philosophy of TASA.
 

ARTICLE XIV: AMENDMENTS

1. Amendments to this constitution may be proposed by any and all members of TASA, provided such proposals shall be submitted in writing to the board at least one month prior to the annual General Meeting. In order for the proposed changes to be made, two-thirds of the majority vote of the members present is necessary.

ARTICLE XV: RATIFICATION

            This Constitution and its fifteen articles are ratified by 18 members present at the meeting called for 03/23/2001. The   meeting is called by the signers of this Constitution who will also be presenting it to the TASA.
