The following is a list of language and gender syllabi collected during the last three years by Scott Kiesling as part of an ongoing project of the Committee on the Status of Women in Linguistics (COSWL) of the Linguistic Society of America (LSA). It is an update of a list collected in 1993 by Elizabeth Hume and Bonnie McElhinny. This collection has been a valuable resource for teachers and students of language and gender courses. Since 1993, scholarship on language and gender has continued to grow, as has the number of courses offered in this field, so COSWL has undertaken the project of updating the list. Below you will find links to 26 syllabi, 13 contributed by the instructor and 10 found on the web by Kiesling. Please note that some of these links take you away from this site; neither COSWL nor LSA is responsible for the content there. Each entry contains the instructor, department, school, and a link to the syllabus. There are also notes if extra information, such as assignments, is included.
If you are a Language and Gender instructor, we encourage you to submit your syllabus, which can simply be a link to your website if you already have it on the web. Please email Scott Kiesling with your name, department, school, and website if applicable. You may also attach your syllabus to the email (most formats can be accepted; HTML or RTF are preferred). [Eventually we should have a cgi form for people to post their syllabi right away, but I dont know how to do that].
Any comments on the collection are welcome. Please email Scott Kiesling at kiesling@pitt.edu
The 1993 Syllabus Collection is still a valuable resource, so please have a look at it as well!
