Course Objectives

We will investigate the connections between language use and culturally enshrined views of gender by

  1. Examining the various levels of language at which differences in gender correlate (or don't) with differences in language use in particular cultures.

  2. Evaluating various explanations for gender-differentiated language use and related issues of gender inequality in language use.

  3. Developing a critical (self-)awareness of the myriad ways in which gender is performed via language use.

Texts

  1. Coates, Jennifer, ed. 1998. Language and Gender: A Reader.

  2. Readings available for photocopy in Main Library Closed Reserve and in Lg & Gender Mailbox in Oxley 222.

Requirements

  1. Readings: Discussion in class is the focal point of learning in this course. To this end, you will be prepared to summarize, comment on, and ask substantive questions on readings for each class session.

  2. Précis: You will write six one-page analytical overviews (word-processed) of selected readings. See separate hand out. Your lowest score will not be counted towards your grade.

  3. Midterm exam: Thursday, August 10.

  4. Research project and presentation/poster. You will plan and carry out original research on a topic in language and gender. If you like, you may collaborate with one other person on this project.

    1. A proposal is due Monday, August 7. The proposal (one-half page, word-processed) will include:

      1. research question, (ii) methodology, (iii) references.

    2. Your data are due Monday, August 14. Your data may consist of a tape and transcript or a tabulation and statistical treatment of responses (in experiments not directly analyzing speech samples).

    3. A word-processed first draft (4-5 pages max) is due 8:30 a.m., Thursday, August 17.

    4. A word-processed final draft (with first draft attached) is due on the day of your class presentation.

    5. You will share your findings in a class presentation: 5 minutes maximum. Prepare a one-page handout. Present your research question, methodology, data, and conclusions. Answer audience questions.

  5. Final: in-class, comprehensive on Tuesday, August 29, 7:30 a.m., Pomerene 206.
