As you can probably tell, I am transgender. My pronouns are she/her. Yes, that is my deadname in the URL. Please don't use it.

I had been questioning whether I was the gender that I'd been assigned at birth since my early teenage years. By the time I reached my mid 20's, I knew that transitioning was not an "if", but a "when" -- I had already realized my correct name, and had begun amassing a pretty substantial wardrobe. However, circumstances (such as my career, my family, and my relationships) would put transition on delay.

After discussing it with a few very close friends, I finally began transitioning, albeit in private, in January 2015. I began attending counseling at Persad and medical treatment at Metro Community Health. My first hormones were on 30 June of that year, and it didn't take long to notice the positive effects it had on my mental health.

By Thanksgiving 2015, I had told virtually all of my closest friends, as well as several co-workers, that I was transitioning, and that I needed to start expressing my correct gender very soon. The two elephants in the room that were still in the way were my job and my family.

There's more...
