Course Description:

History 400 is an introductory survey course on the history of East Asian civilization to about 1800. This is a lower-level course designed for Freshmen and Sophomores. There are no pre-requisites. Regular attendance in lectures and recitation sections is required.

There will be a mid-term and final examination which will combine essay and short answer questions. These exams will cover information presented in class lectures, assigned readings, recitation sections, and on the course web page. The final grade will be weighed as follows: midterm examination, 30% percent; final examination, 40%; and a recitation grade based on participation and attendance, quizzes, and weekly assignments, 30% (see below).

Recitation:

All students must register for a recitation section. All sections are on Thursdays:

10:00 Posvar 5E56
11:00 Posvar 5E56
12:00 Posvar 5E56
2:00 Posvar 3L51

Recitation will count for 30% of your total grade, as follows:

  • Participation and attendance, 10%:  Students who show up to class and never participate will get a C for participation and attendance. Students who actively contribute to class discussions and group work will receive higher grades. You should complete the reading assignments and be prepared to discuss them at each recitation.
  • Weekly assignments and quizzes, 20%:  Each week you will have either a quiz or a short assignment. You may drop two of these weekly assignments with no penalty.  I will not accept late or makeup assignments for any reason.
