In late 2009, an ad hoc group of senior public health experts, who have published extensively on influenza, or have been involved with influenza epidemiology for several decades, was asked to comment on the effectiveness of routine hand-washing for preventing the community spread of influenza.  The excerpted comments provided in this slide are from Dr. David Morens, a  senior adviser to the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Dr. Edwin Kilbourne, Emeritus Professor, New York Medical College -  Dr. Kilbourne, who was the “dean” of all “flu experts” died in early 2011.
