This is a picture of the HLA-DQ antigen, with the α chain and the β chain.  Together, they form a cleft, which is the biologically active site of the antigen.  The many DQA1 and DQB1 alleles differ in DNA sequence, particularly in the cleft region.  These sequence differences slightly change the structure of the cleft, and therefore impact how it functions immunologically.
