Other groups of cholinergic neurons occur in the septum, from which the septohippocampal projection arises, and in the pons, from which fibers run to the thalamus and cortex. Short cholinergic interneurons occur in many areas, particularly in the striatum and in the nucleus accumbens (fig.4).
