  • Transmitter activation of a ligand-gated ion channel leads to a rapid synaptic action lasting milliseconds to seconds.
  • Transmitter activation of a seven transmembrane receptor and a second messenger kinase leads to a more enduring synaptic action lasting minutes.
  • Repeated transmitter activation of a seven transmembrane receptor leads to the translocation of the kinase to the nucleus and to activation of transcription, producing a persistent synaptic action lasting days.
  • Transmitter can also activate local protein synthesis to stabilize the synapse-specific long-term facilitation.
