This pathway involves detoxifying things that are foreign chemicals, as well as things we generate in our body, things we inhale, things we ingest, things that we absorb through the skin, and things that are synthesized in our own tissues, particularly the liver. And the detoxification pathway involves a series of proteins, oxygenases that oxidize chemicals, conjugation enzymes that attach sugars to them to make them soluble, and proteins that can now pump these solubilized substances out of cells, excrete them into the bile, into the intestinal tract so you can get rid of them.
